The Basilica hosted a variety of activities during Advent and Christmas, for all ages
A total of 18,000 people got the chance to feel and experience the Christmas spirit this year at the various activities the Sagrada Família offered to share the joy of the season and the weeks we spend preparing to celebrate it: Advent.
The first of these activities was the Christmas workshop, which took place from 6 December to 5 January. At this workshop, 500 kids aged 6 to 12 and their guardians enjoyed a tour of the Basilica focusing, above all, on the details of the Nativity façade, which explains how Jesus came into the world. Then, the children did a handicraft workshop and made a felt piece with some of the most characteristic symbols of Christmas.
On 15 December, the Basilica offered visitors the chance to share in the moving experience of music and the Christmas spirit with the traditional Christmas concert. This year, the concert featured the Orquestra Simfònica Julià Carbonell de les Terres de Lleida, the Cor de Cambra de l’Auditori Enric Granados from Lleida, the Cor de Cambra de la Diputació de Girona and the Santuari de Lluc Blauets choir from Mallorca, led by Xavier Puig and Ricard Terradas. More than 1,600 people, including the winners of the draw the Sagrada Família held to give out tickets, attended the concert.
Additionally, on 21, 22 and 23 December, there was a light show on the Nativity façade, the only one to break ground during Gaudí’s lifetime, which expresses the joy of Jesus’ birth and the hope and happiness of life. By lighting up the various sculpture groups on the façade, with a musical narration, we told the story of the scenes of the historical arrival of God’s son and the symbolism behind each of them. More than 14,000 people enjoyed this special light show.
And finally, on 24 December at 7:30 pm, the Sagrada Família hosted its first ever midnight mass. One thousand people took part in it.
