“We’re all towers of the same humanity”, a community sculpture that was created for the inauguration of the tower of the Virgin Mary

“We’re all towers of the same humanity” is a community sculpture that was created for the inauguration of the tower of the Virgin Mary
On 13 December 2021, the collaborative art piece was inaugurated to commemorate the inauguration of the tower of the Virgin Mary. This initiative was promoted by the Basilica of the Sagrada Família, with the Artenea Foundation, Apropa Cultura and the Barcelona City Council and support from the Association of Surveyors, Technical Architects and Building Engineers of Barcelona.
The result of the initiative was a large art piece that rests on an iron structure, from which 2,400 rocks painted by the participants hang.
The spirit that motivated this project aimed to convey values of solidarity, hope, care and love for one another. There were 2,400 participants from 20 occupational workshops in Barcelona, 24 elderly care centres in the city, 5 mental health organisations and 5 organisations from the Sagrada Família Community Plan.
The result of this collective effort is a conical sculpture that stands three metres tall with a curtain of 2,400 slate stones painted in tones of blue, evoking the mantle of the Virgin Mary.
The piece is currently on display on the Sagrada Família grounds so everyone who participated can come visit it.

Art installation, made by the elderly, commemorates Sant Jordi at the Basilica

“Sant Jordi at the Sagrada Família, roses to remember” was the name of the tour/workshop for the elderly in the Sagrada Família neighbourhood and highlighted the stained-glass windows, colours and feast of Sant Jordi.

In order to continue hosting participative projects associated with social actions, the Basilica offered a tour and workshop for Sant Jordi. This very special initiative was organised jointly with the Artenea Art-Therapy Foundation, with support from Associació Amics de la Gent Gran and collaboration from care homes in the Sagrada Família neighbourhood. Participants created a large-format collaborative art piece by painting plexiglass roses of different shapes in a pre-selected palette of warm colours.

The art piece, which conveyed strength and sensitivity, fostered the participants’ creativity.

Charity roses for Sant Jordi 2023 at the Sagrada Família

One of the highlights of Sant Jordi this year was the “The Temple of Light” tour the Basilica gave for members of El Lloc de la Dona, a social organisation working with women in vulnerable situations.

The women took part in an art workshop prepared for the occasion, creating stained-glass windows inspired by the rose of Sant Jordi and discovering the importance and meaning of light at the Temple.

The women from the Dona Kolors social workshop this organisation promotes made the 2023 Sant Jordi charity roses, which were hand sewn and given out to Basilica staff.

Visit “El temple de la llum” (The Temple of light)

Since 2017, the Sagrada Família has been working with the Apropa Cultura programme to give people who are at-risk or have disabilities or special needs the opportunity to visit the Basilica.
The Apropa Cultura programme covers all cultural and social sectors seeking to work together for a more inclusive culture, emphasising culture’s power to transform and working to make it accessible to the most vulnerable.
At the Basilica, we offer all these groups a special, accessible tour called “El temple de la llum” (The Temple of light), giving them a first-hand experience of the Temple.
This guided tour is designed for associations, organisations, centres and other institutions working in the third sector. The experience strives to adapt to the needs of each specific group, at a reduced price, based on the type of entity.
For more information, contact projectesocial@sagradafamilia.org.

Free visits for refuges

The Junta Constructora Board of Trustees, aware of what the Ukrainian people are currently going through, as well as armed conflicts around the world, is pleased to invite all refugees to visit the Basilica through our social programme with Apropa Cultura, helping new arrivals discover our heritage.

The Sagrada Família, also aware of refugee families who have recently arrived in Barcelona from Ukraine and to help them integrate, organised three days of free visits designed for families with children and teenagers. This visit, “The Temple of Light”, is a special, accessible tour that focuses mainly on light as a symbol of hope. The visits, which gave participants the chance to discover and experience the Basilica, finished with a workshop to paint a small stained-glass window with the slogan ‘Jo soc la llum’ (I am the light) to take with them as a souvenir.

Plus, as we already had an audioguide in Ukrainian, from 1 July through the end of the year, the Basilica is also offering this audioguide for free, thanks to the relations with the Ukrainian Consulate and support from the Diocesan Delegation of Social Pastoral.

International Day of Deafblindness

On 27 June, for International Day of Deafblindness, the Basilica welcomed a group of people affiliated with the ONCE Foundation for a tactile tour.

The Basilica has worked with the ONCE Foundation for some time and has adapted materials for this community, which were used to offer an accessible, inclusive visit: a tactile model of the tower of the Virgin Mary, a model of the Temple floorplan and several pieces with relief to promote a better understanding of the Temple project.

This collaboration with the ONCE Foundation makes it possible to continue our work to open the Basilica doors to all and give everyone an equal opportunity to discover the Temple.
